This image of yesterday's Sun shows two Space Stations "transiting" the Sun during the day. The largest is the International Space Station. The speck on the left hand side is the SOHO satallite, which is the source of most of the data which is used by the Earth Changes Bulletin.

Solar MIN continues VERY MIN. So far average monthly Sunspot Counts for April, May, and June have fallen far below the predicted numbers. In fact they are rock bottom counts, about as low as they ever get. This suggests a much slower start to Sunspot Cycle 24 than NASA scientists were predicting at the beginning of the year. This is a terrible time for predicting what the Sun might do tomorrow, but it appears to be a pretty good "season" for the Mars research, Space Station work, and outer space flights. The Sunspot Count rose to a small spike of about 13 last week and persisted on a Flux of 68 for fours days. This small surge was no doubt for the Mercury | Alignment, as predicted, but it was surprisingly tepid. Solar Activity has been zip for the past three days but a magnetic storm in the Solar Wind has produced some atmospheric disturbances during the past 36 hours and this may persist for a few days. The Earth is in a solar wind from a coronal hole and this is producing the magnetic storms in the Earth's atmosphere. The Planetary A Magnetic Index (upper atmosphere field strength) is spiking rapidly, currently at about 30. Such disturbances are likely to persist in the next few weeks for the Mercury flyby of both Earth and Jupiter while Earth aligns with Jupiter. Alaska's Fluxgate Monitor Graph shows major magnetic disturbance and conditions likely will remain unstable, chaotic, and full of disturbances for another few weeks. For the next 48 hours, NASA predicts a 1% or less probability of major explosive or flare events on the Sun with a 10% to 35% probability of major magnetic disturbances in the Earth's atmosphere in the higher latitudes. The planetary alignments during the next three weeks are likely to build small surges in the Solar Flux and a small surge in Sunspots. In early June we forecast a likelihood that these surges could be greater than have been seen for at least a year but the tepid response of the Sun to the Earth | Mercury alignment on June 17 may indicate that the Sun is not really very ready for major activity in the nascent Solar Cycle 24. ATMOSPHERICS: La Nina has dissolved but the North Atlantic Oscillation has re-emerged with warmer than usual water around Ireland and the North Seat. It may still be accelerating the warming of the North Atlantic. So also has the North Pacific Gyre Hot Spot rapidly re-emerged and is in fact now huge, stretching from Japan to nearly British Columbia. Most likely it contributed significantly to the massive flooding in Iowa and it is certain to have have a major impact on the Jet Stream and the weather of western North America during the coming Summer weeks, perhaps all the way to next Winter. Movement towards El Nino may still be slowly consolidating in the Eastern Pacific but progress has been very slow. This cycle advent is still impossible to clearly predict at the moment but the seven year wobble cycle suggests that it should appear this year. NASA projections as of late April show 15 different forecasts (from different groups of scientists) many of which predict El Nino appearing at different points in 2008, ranging between July and November. Some predictors propose that weak La Nina will continue on until 2009.

Over all, weather conditions remain unpredictable and probably will get somewhat more chaotic during the next few weeks, driven increasingly by a northern latitude Sun which is still primarily in its 11 year MINIMUM phase of activity. Weather averages will be pushed slightly to the higher latitudes to reflect the Global Warming effect of the warming oceans, most especially by the Pacific Gyre Hot Spot, which is huge and unusually warm in the Alaskan Gulf. So far planetary alignments have failed to ignite great enough peaks in Solar Activity to contribute much to the weather/climate extremes of 2008. But this could change in July with the Earth | Jupiter alignment. Watch for El Nino, it may be consolidating and if it does so rapidly it will mute out the Atlantic Hurricane Season. So will the North Atlantic Oscillation, which is rapidly and significantly driving up sea surface temperatures in the North Sea area. It too is likely to diffuse hurricane formation, draw wet marine air to the north, and shower Northern Europe with a wet summer. Watch the Pacific carefully as the equatorial surface water heats up.

Probably the most important factor this week is the North Pacific Gyre Hot Spot. Here only the Earth Changes Bulletin clearly outlined in late May and at the beginning of June the consequences of the warming ocean temperatures in the North Pacific for weather and flooding in the Midwest. THIS WAS A SIGNIFICANT SCORE FOR THE VORTEX PARADIGM. This can only be the Global Warming Syndrome, showing us what the new weather "normal" is becoming as the Earth's oceans continue to gradually warm.

Here are the next several weeks. Warmer than normal water is still building up in the central Pacific in both extent and heat content. As it has for the last month, which produced the Mid Western Floods of this past and current week, the Hot Gyre is likely to continue to torque a very wet Jet Stream to the extreme north and then suck it down the continental western plains of North America before it turns again over Colorado or Kansas to push the wet cool air from the north to collide with the warm wet air from the Carib. Even if Hurricanes are not prolific, which probably will not generally hit North America this year, huge Thunderstorms through central North America likely will be memorable during the Summer months. Accordingly, weather during June through October most likely will be more energetic, more chaotic and less easy to predict. Some major storms with some extreme patterns are likely during July and the extreme tornadoes in the mid-west (which are probably induced this season and year by a combination of Global Warming and the North Pacific Gyre Hot Spot) will continue to be fairly frequent.

Hurricane and tornado season is still predicted by NOAA to be modestly to substantially greater than last year and April's forecast has already been upgraded to forecast more storms. Super storms are clearly on the way but the warm up of the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Pacific Gyre Hot Spot, and emerging ENSO this year are likely to mute them in North America. Most likely Atlantic hurricane seasons will not become record-makers again until 2010, but as we just saw in Myanmar, another nasty punch or two this year is entirely possible. The result will be pretty much pure "Global Warming" syndrome, mightily influenced throughout the Northern Hemisphere by the North Central Pacific Gyre, with occasional peaking of storm intensity by surges in Solar Activity (but Solar Activity looks like it is going to be minor for the next few months). In general, NOAA believes this year is going to be hotter and drier than normal for much of North America but the patterns are likely to make sudden, chaotic shifts. GEOPHYSICAL FACTORS: No new news on the Wobble this week as it continues to expand. No major change from prior weeks. See Polar Motion for additional information. AS PREDICTED: lunar influence on the tectonic plates have increased quake and volcanic activity during the previous two months and it will likely do so again with larger spikes in frequency and magnitude, beginning approximately RIGHT NOW as we are in the Full Moon Syzygy of Mid June. The Moon is once again nearly FULL (June 17/18) while just past its monthly orbital Apogee (furthest distance from the Earth). It will approach its Extreme Southern Declination also on June 17/18, giving us a double whammy of torque pulling the Northern and Southern Hemispheres apart even as the Great Rift expands in the Atlantic, Arctic, and Pacific while the Sun and Moon pull the Earth apart from opposite sides. Notice how closely this alignment of vectors occurs with the orbital Aphelion of the Earth (furthest distance away from the Sun). This kind of synchronicity continually recurs through the millennia in a complex series of variations which are virtually the same. Expect a renewed surge in tectonic motion, which has already began in the Great Rifts, to continue until possibly as late as June 22/23.

There will be another similar synchronization in July of 2008, then strong dis-synchronization until November 2008. November will begin a new round of synchronized Lunar cycles, with December producing the strongest synchronization of the year in a near perfect alignment with the Earth's Perihelion, during both the New Moon (Dec. 27/28) and Full Moon (Dec. 13). These then are likely months of the greatest quake events and these are likely to exceed the tectonic activity of April/ May/June.

The Full Moon Syzygy, barely started, has not increased average frequency nor magnitude of quakes. They remain in the low range of normal. We will have perhaps another week of elevated quake activity but probably not as great as the syzygy surges in May and early June. But, as it has been for years, North America is loaded, primed, cocked, and ready to rip. Recent activity in the Great Rifts in both the Atlantic and the East Pacific may portend more activity to come in the Andes from Chile to Alaska.

Since the Sun's gravity influence is at about its lowest level for the year, the coming tidal seismic storm is being brought primarily by the Moon's orbital influences, which has three primary aspects: phase (relationship to the Sun), perigee or apogee (closeness), and declination (tilt of orbit vis a vis orbit of Earth). Two (phase and declination) presently are "focusing" at the moment in a synergistic "syzygy" (alignment with the Sun) to increase the influence of the gravity of both the Moon and the Sun on the surface of the Earth. The Moon creates vast tides in both the water AND the ground, causing both to rise and fall as a result of its gravity influence. The current influence will be smaller than during the last New Moon.

In this Full Moon Syzygy, the strongest stress in likely to be in the Great Rift zones since the Moon and the Sun will be pulling apart the Earth on opposite sides of the Earth. During this particular syzygy, the Sun's greatest pull is on the Northern Hemisphere, the Moon's strongest pull is on the Southern Hemisphere. Acting at 180 degrees (opposition) to the direction the crust's spin, the gravity vectors will tend to pull the Earth's crust up against the edges of the tectonic plates, thus increasing the pressures with produce compression and subduction of the great blocks of crust. Meanwhile, world volcanism is still vigorous and overall activity has surged modestly during the past two weeks. The majority of reports have been updated during the past four days and they are describing more ash, and more widespread lava extrusion and pyrotechnic flows, as would be indicated by the renewed lava flows on our portent, Etna. Currently the Active List is at 30, the Restless List is at 4, and the Alert List rose by 2 to 80. Mighty Etna on Sicily re-awakened on the 11th of June with increased lava flows and Chaitin in Chile re-ignited on the 13th with lava and ash flows. Though the active erupters remain virtually the same, their activity is definitely up from two weeks ago. This rise in activity should continue for a few days right on through the Full Moon Syzygy.

Speaking of Etna, once again renewed activity in Etna portended significant tectonic motion. Its renewed lava expression on June 11 was followed by two shape shifter quakes in the East Pacific Rifts, a 5.4 and a 4.6 . On June 12, Chaiten in southern Chile, erupted vigorously once again. This was followed the next day on the opposite side of the spreading East Pacific Great Rift, with a 7.2 Great Quake on Honshu Island (Japan) on June 13. More activity in Japan, more in the Andes, or the Carib plate, or Alaska, or western coast of N.A.? Impossible to know with precision, but another Great Quake or even just more Major Quakes (Class 6) are probably likely in one or more of these areas during this Full Moon Syzygy.

In other volcanoes, Kilauea STILL remains productive of lava flowing into the ocean with both ash and sulfur dioxide emissions. Popo is puffing out ash and steam but with Colima it is cooking more slowly, as are most of the Carib Plate regulars. Soufriere Hills has fallen silent, but Erebus, Stromboli, Yasur, and Arenal continue their long ever-lasting eruptions. This year's peak volcano activity is likely to form up this June and early July and then fall off until November 08 in synchronicity with the lunar cycles. SO FAR THIS PREDICTION IS PRECISELY ON TRACK. January's Volcano prediction looks pretty good: "In accordance with past wobble cycles and the general average trend of increase in volcanic activity, I expect that volcanic activity during 2008 will be about the same as 2007 or abate by a small percentage."

A RECENT CHART DEFINES "THE CHANGE IN THE EARTH". Click to see the threefold trend in world quake activity 4+ for 1973-2007. This increase in seismic energy is signaling all the other Changes In The Earth, including Global Warming. Daily average frequency of 4+ quakes has risen from 11 in 1973 to about 35 in 2007. The average rose dramatically during 2005/06 and is currently lower. The daily average for 2007 will probably rise a little by the end of the year and may rise more slowly during the next few years. Statistics are tricky master illusionists so be careful with this following thought: an exponential growth curve can be drawn through earthquake data 4+ to project another DOUBLING of the current frequency by about 2020.
