My fingers and wrists were giving me numbness and pain problems the weeks before this recording, but except for lack of practice, the session went very well. Every year, celebrated pianist and composer, Cornplanter spends time rejuvenating and meditating in the wilderness of Northern New Mexico, where he cuts and ties smudge.  Many herbs were burned by Native Americans; these two, the Artemesia sage brush (not Salvia sage) and the Juniperus cedar, were used for Spiritual Cleansing

   Throughout the world, native and herbal traditions of totally unrelated peoples have credited the genus Artemisia (sagebrush or wormwood) and Juniperus (juniper or cedar) with strong, curative anti-negativity powers.  "Bad vibes" seem foolish to scientific minds, but to people who have never seen a virus, bacterium, or liver fluke, the cause of their discomfort could appear to be "negativity".   The anti-microbial effects of the Artemisia  and Juniperus species is well documented.  There is also some evidence of the oils of these plants helping to cleanse spirit, or drive away negative spirits or ghosts.   Native traditions across North America used these herbs for burning (smudging) and for steaming in sweat lodges for spiritual cleansing.
